AI for real estate agents: what it is and how to start

September 30, 2026

Polly Keene in a tan blouse beside the headline AI for real estate agents: where to start.

The short answer.

AI for real estate agents is software you talk to in plain English that drafts, plans, and organizes your work. Tools like Claude and ChatGPT can write a listing description, a follow up email, or a week of social posts in minutes, and you stay in charge of the final version.

  • AI writes from what you give it, so specific input produces a useful draft and vague input produces a generic one.
  • The best first tasks are ones you repeat weekly, like seller updates and follow up texts.
  • Free versions of Claude and ChatGPT are enough to start.
  • AI should never make final decisions, invent market facts, or replace your fair housing judgment.
  • You review every draft before it reaches a client.

I'm Polly Keene, AI Trainer and Consultant and founder of Keene on AI. After seven years as a licensed REALTOR in San Antonio, I teach agents and REALTORS across Texas and beyond to use AI with confidence.

Real estate runs on speed and trust. Sellers expect an update before they ask, buyers expect a reply tonight, and your marketing never stops. AI gives you time back on the repeatable work, so you can spend it on conversations, which is where you win business.

What is AI for real estate agents?

AI, short for artificial intelligence, is software that finds patterns in huge amounts of text and uses them to write new text. The tools most agents use are called chatbots, or large language models. You type a request, and the tool replies.

The tool does not know your market on its own. It writes from what you give it plus what it learned in training, so the quality of your input decides the quality of the draft. A detailed request gets a useful draft. A vague request gets a generic one.

How can real estate agents use AI?

Real estate agents can use AI for any writing or planning task they repeat. The most common uses are:

  1. Listing descriptions and property highlights
  2. Seller update emails after showings
  3. Follow up texts and emails to buyers
  4. Social media captions and video scripts
  5. Summaries of market data you paste in
  6. Preparation notes for a listing appointment

In every case, AI writes a first draft and you improve it. You add the detail only you know, like how the light hits the kitchen at four in the afternoon.

These are the jobs agents already hand off most. In NAR's 2026 REALTORS Technology Report, agents who use AI said they use it for listing descriptions (75%), social media posts (56%), and emails and follow ups (52%).

What should AI never do for you?

AI should not make final decisions, invent market facts, replace your fair housing judgment, or handle private client details in a free tool. You review every draft before it goes out, because AI writes with confidence even when it is wrong. Pricing recommendations always come from you, not the tool.

Which AI tool should you start with?

Start with one tool. Claude and ChatGPT are both strong all around choices for agents, and both offer a free version. Perplexity fits research because it answers with linked sources. Gemini fits agents who work inside Google. Do not spend a week comparing them. Pick one and use it on a real task.

How do you get started in 15 minutes?

Follow these steps:

  1. Choose one task you do every week, like a follow up text.
  2. Open Claude or ChatGPT. The free version is fine.
  3. Write a prompt with a role, a task, and details. For example: you are a listing agent in San Antonio, write a friendly follow up text under 50 words to a buyer who loved the backyard.
  4. Ask for two versions so you can choose the one that sounds like you.
  5. Read the draft out loud, and change anything you would not say.
  6. Save the prompt and reuse it next week.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI and how can real estate agents use it?

AI is software that writes and organizes text when you give it instructions. Real estate agents use it for listing descriptions, seller updates, follow up messages, social posts, and appointment preparation. You edit every draft before it goes out, so the final message still sounds like you.

What is a large language model?

A large language model is the type of AI behind chatbots like Claude and ChatGPT. It learns patterns from large amounts of text and uses them to write new text in response to your request. It does not look up your MLS or know your listings unless you give it that information.

Which tasks should agents start with?

Start with a task you repeat every week, like a seller update or a follow up text. These tasks are low risk, easy to check, and quick to improve. Once you trust the process, add listing descriptions, captions, and appointment preparation.

Can AI write listing descriptions and client emails?

Yes. Give the tool the facts, the standout features, and the tone, and it can write a strong first draft in under a minute. Then add a detail only you know and check every fact before you publish or send.

Is AI safe to use with client information?

Keep client names, addresses, and financial details out of free tools, and check your broker's AI policy first. Different plans handle data differently, so read each tool's privacy settings before you paste anything private. Use placeholders and fill in private details yourself.

Do I need to pay for AI tools?

Not to start. The free versions of Claude and ChatGPT handle emails, captions, and property descriptions well. Paid plans add higher usage limits and extra features, which matter once you use AI every day.

Will my clients know I used AI?

Clients hear your voice when you edit the draft and add your own details. Follow your broker's policy and any local rules on disclosure. Never use AI to invent facts or hide a property's condition.

What should AI never do for an agent?

AI should not make final decisions, invent market facts, replace your fair housing judgment, or handle private client details in a free tool. Treat every output as a first draft, and review it before it reaches a client. You stay responsible for everything you publish or send.
